Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International
Airport constitutes the international airport
in Kolkata city. The airport is the prime air carrier
of the north eastern cities of the India and an entry
point for a foreign tourist. The airport is located
about 16 kms from the center of the city and at a
place called Dum Dum. The airport has been delivering
services from the year 1924 when the first aircraft
(Dakota-3) landed here. The airport has earned a great
reputation in the recent years. The 50,000 passenger
traffic statistics has put it in the list of the busiest
airports of India.
The domestic airport for Kolkata city is grounded
at Behala. Behala Airport is located towards the west
of the city and at a distance of about 13 kms from
the heart of the city. The airport serves as the landing
strip for the passenger flights in the nearby cities.
Roadways connects the airport with the rest of the
city.
Howrah Railway Station :
Howrah Railway Station is one of the largest railway
terminals in the world. The station is grounded in
the win city of Kolkata that is Howrah. Hooghly river
separates the mainlands of the Howrah and Kolkata,
but the regions are linked with well established railway
lines, roadways and water transport. Howrah Railway
Complex came to life when it breathed for the first
time in the year 1854. The first train of the station
ran from Howrah to Pandua in the same year. Since
then the railway complex has been providing services
to most of the cities of India.
Howrah Railway Station has two adjacent
terminals, the old and the new one. The old terminal
caters to the South Eastern as well as Eastern Railways
where as the new one provides services to the South
Eastern Railways only. Rajdhani and Shatabdi are best
two trains that run to and from the station. Howrah
Railway Complex also houses a hotel, Yatri Niwas,
that provides facilities to the travellers.
Sealdah Railway Station :
Sealdah Railway Station is the main railway station
in the city of Kolkata. The railway station provides
the services to the city suburbs as well as long distance
transportation. Sealdah with the nearby railway station
of Howrah form the headquarters of Eastern and South
Eastern Railways. Sealdah Railway Station is primarily
a suburban service provider.
Sealdah Railway Station has two sections, one facilitating
the transportation in the city suburbs only and called
as the South section, and the other providing for
the long distances as well as the city suburbs and
called as the Main Section. Sealdah South Section
provides transportation to areas like Ballygunje,
Jadavpur, Garia, Budge and district towns of West
Bengal like Port Canning, Shantipur and Diamond Harbour.
The Main section provides services to the northern
suburbs like Dum Dum, Barrackpore, Kalyani and district
towns of Ranaghat, Krishnanagar, Shantipur, etc.
