Dum Dum
Dum Dum is an important centre in Kolkata city. The
place which provides a number of transport facilities
in the city has developed into a modern commercial
centre in the outskirts of Kolkata. Dum Dum region
is important as it constitutes main entry points of
the city. The area being provided with a domestic
and international airport is the landing base for
the foreigners visiting the city. The township falls
in the northern region of Kolkata city. Dum Dum region
is about 10 kms from the city center which is taken
to be Chandni Chowk. The nearby localities include
Jhilbagan, Ghughu Danga and Jawpur.
Dum Dum is believed to have got its name from the
Persian word 'damdama' meaning a raised platform or
ground. The place used to be the headquarters of British
artillery in the 19th century. Dum Dum area in present
epoch constitutes the urban industrialized unit of
Kolkata city. In the region are grounded several factories
like jute milling, tannery, iron and steel rolling,
glass, match and soap. The region has a number of
hospitals, schools and other health care units.
Dum Dum forms the base, the primary station for accessing
Kolkata city. Besides the airport the region is provided
with the subway terminal. The Kolkata metro (subway)
communes between Dum Dum in the north to Tollygunj
in the south. Very close to the metro terminal is
located the Dum Dum Railway station. Dum Dum as such
provides easy access into the city and beyond.
Accessibility
Primary means of moving to the place is the subway,
Kolkata Metro. The subway terminal is itself groundedin
the region.
The region also has a railway station that provides
the means of railway transportation.
Netaji Subhash Chander Bose International Airport
or Dum Dum Airport is located within the township
premises. The domestic airport, that is at Behala
is about 22 kms from Dum Dum.
The road distance from the city center is appoximately
10 kms. Buses and taxis are easily available from
the city center.

Lake Town
Lake Town is a small locality situated towards the
north of Kolkata city. The region has no tourist attractions
as such but like the rest of the regions of the city
there are crowded appartments, shops, schools, hospitals
and more. The region is about eight kilometres from
the city centre. One can access the place either from
the northern side by taking the Jessore Road or taking
the Nazrul Islam Avenue on the southern end. The adjoining
regions of Lake Town include Dakshindanri, Bangur
Avenue and Salt Lake.
A lot of activity follows in the daily schedule at
Lake Town. The important enterprises consists of the
popular commercial banks, schools, hospitals, shops
and more. Amongst the renowned institutes, East Calcutta
Girls College and Daffodil Nursing has made a name.
Ulta Danga railway station and Dum Dum metro terminal
are in the vicinity and not more than three or four
kilometres from the place. The subway terminal lies
towards the north-west of Lake Town where as the railway
station lies to the south-west of Lake Town.

Dakshineswar
Dakshineswar is one of the renowned pilgrim places
in Kolkata city. The Dakshineswar Temple located in
the city suburb is the prime attraction. The temple,
built by Rani Rashmani in 1847, with its 12 spires
holds the spiritual beauty in the lavish courtyards
of the temple complex. The famous spiritual leader
Rama Krishna Parmahamsa is believed to have achieved
spiritual vision in the temple.
